Adult deer can easily jump to heights of 7 feet or higher and can squeeze through small gaps in vertical or horizontal board fences. While short fences (4 feet) can effectively reduce damage around very small areas or individual trees or shrubs, a "deer-proof" fence needs to be 8 feet or taller and made of sturdy, impenetrable materials such as welded wire or chain link to be effective in the long term. This type of fence can be expensive, unattractive, and in many cases, impractical. However, the one-time cost of erecting a permanent 8-foot fence may be offset by years of damage-free areas.
However, now there is a plastic mesh fence made of PET material that offers even more enticing features while retaining the advantages of a welded wire or chain link fence. For example:
1.Up to sixty years of lifespan
2.Special double-twisted hexagonal weave
3.Only one-sixth the weight of conventional wire mesh
4.100% corrosion-resistant
5.Acid and alkali resistant
These characteristics greatly compensate for the drawbacks of welded wire or chain link fences. And of course, with the long-lasting protection of up to sixty years, the initial one-time cost becomes insignificant.
Woven plastic mesh is used to provide year-round protection for high-value crops that are susceptible to heavy deer pressure. While this type of fence can be expensive, it is relatively easy to maintain. Its 60-year lifespan, combined with the nature of high-value crops that are consistently damaged by deer and the area they cover, justifies the initial cost. The high cost has led to a reduced use of woven plastic mesh fences. However, they remain the most effective fencing option. Unless you are familiar with fence construction or have a fence area smaller than five acres, it is recommended to consult or hire a fence contractor to ensure proper installation and that your investment is effective and durable.
To construct a deer-proof woven plastic mesh fence, follow the steps below:
1.Install rigid corner components if necessary.
2.String a light wire between two corners and apply slight tension.
3.Set 16-foot posts at 40-foot intervals along the wireline, with a depth of 4 to 6 feet.
4.Unroll a coil of 8-foot high-strength woven wire along the line of posts. Secure one end to a corner post using steel nails.
5.Apply 100 pounds of tension to the wire using a vehicle or a fence puller, and secure the wire to the line posts and corner posts with steel nails.
6.Repeat steps 4 and 5 around the perimeter of the fence as needed.
7.Attach two strands of high-strength smooth wire at the top of the fence to raise the overall height to 9 to 10 feet.
Following these steps will help you construct a deer-proof woven plastic mesh fence.
