When considering a new boarding facility or bringing horses back home, there are many details to consider, but some choices should be non-negotiable for the safety and well-being of the horses. One of these non-negotiable requirements for providing your horses is the type of fencing.

There are certain types of fencing that are unsafe for horses under any circumstances. These include barbed wire and large square mesh. Barbed wire can easily trap a panicked horse as it tries to go through or jump over it, causing severe injuries to its skin, tendons, and other internal structures, potentially ending its career or even its life. Ideally, fences made with square mesh should have openings no larger than 3 inches square; anything larger increases the risk of getting a hoof caught in the fence.

If you are installing fencing on your own horse property, there are many factors at play in the decision-making process, including terrain, budget, aesthetics, and maintenance. The height of all fences should be between 4 1/2 to 5 feet (at least) to safely contain horses. The bottom of the fence should be 6 to 8 inches off the ground, which will prevent foals (if you have any) from rolling out of the field and also discourage horses from reaching under the fence to graze.

When it comes to selecting the right type of horse fencing, we have our own set of criteria:

A. Height and stability: The fence should have an appropriate height and stability to prevent horses from escaping or getting injured.

B. Material selection: The fencing material should be safe, durable, resistant to damage, and preferably have a long lifespan with low maintenance costs.

C. Visual visibility: The fence should have sufficient visibility to help horses avoid collisions or injuries.

D. Prevention of entrapment: The design of the fence should avoid situations where horses can get trapped or stuck, preventing harm to the horses.

Suitable for five fence types

PET plastic mesh fencing:
PET plastic mesh fencing utilizes a special double-twisted hexagonal turtle shell grid design, providing excellent strength and stability. This design enables the fence to effectively prevent animals from crossing and escaping.

The fence made from PET plastic material boasts outstanding durability and corrosion resistance. PET material has a lifespan of up to 60 years and is not affected by corrosion or decay. Additionally, it has excellent resistance to acids and alkalis, withstanding the erosion of chemical substances.

PET plastic mesh fencing is lightweight, making it easy to install. It is lighter compared to fences made from other materials, allowing for convenient and quick installation. It maintains high strength while being lightweight.

PET plastic mesh fencing is easy to install and maintain. The fence employs a simple design and assembly method, enabling installers to quickly complete the installation process. Furthermore, it has low maintenance costs, requiring only periodic simple cleaning and upkeep.

Safe wire mesh fencing:

Woven wire is one of the more cost-effective options for fencing, but it is recommended to enhance the visibility of this type of fence by using a top board or electric tape. This will also prevent horses from leaning on the fence.

V-mesh wire (also known as no-climb fencing) is one of the safest fencing options available. This type of fence has a diamond pattern that makes it equally effective at keeping animals out and keeping horses inside. The downside is the cost; it is the most expensive type of wire fencing.

Smooth wire, while low in construction cost, is one of the least visible fence options for horses. Because of this, smooth metal wire used for horse facilities is often coated with white PVC and combined with some form of electric (tape or hot wire) to prevent horses from leaning on it.

PVC fencing:
While visually appealing, PVC fencing is quite expensive and designed to break under pressure. It is a good idea to combine some form of electric fencing with PVC fencing as horses quickly learn that leaning on it will cause the boards to make noise.

Pipe fencing:
While pipe steel fencing is sturdy and durable, it lacks "give" if a horse were to collide with it. The transportation and labor costs for installing this type of fence can be high, and once installed, it is difficult to make modifications.

Steel Tube Fence

Electric fencing:
Electric fencing can be used on its own or in combination with almost any other type of fencing. Electric wire and tape are affordable options that enhance the effectiveness and lifespan of other fence materials by preventing horses from leaning on or chewing them. Typically, a single shock is enough to keep horses away from the electrified fence.

We would recommend taking a comprehensive approach, considering factors such as terrain, budget, aesthetics, and maintenance. Choose a fence type that suits the characteristics of your site's terrain. For example, for uneven terrain, adjustable-height fencing could be considered. It's important to be clear about your budget limitations to ensure that you choose a fence that aligns with your economic capacity. Consider the coordination of the fence with the surrounding environment and architectural style, and ensure that the fence is easy to maintain to minimize future maintenance costs and workload.

Additionally, customize the fencing solution based on the needs and characteristics of the horses. Different horses may have varying behavioral patterns and requirements. For example, active horses may require higher fences, while calm horses may be suitable for lower fences. Choose appropriate fence types such as PET plastic mesh fencing, safe wire mesh fencing, or electric fencing, and determine the suitable height and spacing to ensure the safety and freedom of movement for the horses.
